(CVC) develops a <strong>device-associated bloodstream infection. <\/strong><sup>2<\/sup> This problem is usually caused by inadequate maintenance of central lines and leads to <strong>increased healthcare costs, increased likelihood of sepsis or even morbidity and mortality. <sup>3<\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another major problem, which can also increase the probability of suffering a central venous catheter-related infection, is occlusion, mainly due to the interaction of fibrin, thrombus and biofilms. <sup>2<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An important indicator of patient safety is the incidence of <strong>adverse events<\/strong> <strong>occurring in hospitals<\/strong> (AE&#8217;s) including bacteremia and phlebitis among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>ADVERSE EFFECTS LINKED TO HOSPITALIZATION<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The National Study on Adverse Effects Linked to Hospitalization (NSAEH), carried out in 24 hospitals of the Spanish National Health System in <strong>adult patients<\/strong>, concludes that <strong>42.8% of AE&#8217;s were avoidable.<\/strong><sup> 5<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In <strong>66.3% <\/strong>of all AE&#8217;s, new procedures, such as radiodiagnostic tests, were required. <sup>5<\/sup><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Additional treatments, such as medication, rehabilitation or surgery, were required in<strong> 69.9% <\/strong>of the total. <sup>5<\/sup><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Consequently, AE&#8217;s result in <strong>higher health care costs<\/strong>, due to directly related hospital admissions: more days of stay, tests and treatments that could have been avoided in almost half of the cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the most common complications linked to a hospital stay that we can find in patients with a venous catheter are <strong>phlebitis and bacteremia.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>VASCULAR ACCESS-RELATED INFECTION<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>There are two types of infectious problems associated with vascular accesses:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Local:<\/strong> catheter exit site infection or thrombophlebitis.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>General:<\/strong> bacteremia associated with the catheter and possible distant complications such as arthritis, endocarditis, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>IS IT POSSIBLE TO REDUCE CVC-RELATED INFECTION?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>There are several factors that can increase the likelihood of encountering central venous catheter-related infection:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Patient:<\/strong> immunodeficiency, renal replacement therapy, etc.<sup>4<\/sup><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Catheter:<\/strong> prolonged dwell time, type of material and anatomical site of insertion. <sup>4<\/sup><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Healthcare practice:<\/strong> during catheter insertion and management. <sup>4<\/sup><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2009, the Quality Agency of the Ministry of Health and Consumer Affairs (MSC), in collaboration with the <strong>World Health Organization (WHO)<\/strong> World Alliance for Patient Safety, launched the <strong>Bacteremia Zero project<\/strong>. <sup>6<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Bacteremia Zero project is created with the primary goal of reducing the statewide average catheter-related bacteremia rate (CRB) to <strong>less than 4 episodes of bacteremia per 1,000 CVC days. <\/strong><sup>6<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to this initiative, the CRB has been significantly reduced, but even after more than ten years it continues to be a major problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"881\" height=\"837\" src=\"https:\/\/campusvygon.com\/global\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2025\/04\/recomendations-eng.jpg\" alt=\"recomendations-eng\" class=\"wp-image-52197\" srcset=\"https:\/\/campusvygon.com\/global\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2025\/04\/recomendations-eng.jpg 881w, https:\/\/campusvygon.com\/global\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2025\/04\/recomendations-eng-480x456.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 881px, 100vw\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>BACTERIEMIA ZERO<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>HAND HYGIENE<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Proper hand hygiene should be performed before and after palpating catheter insertion sites. As well as before and after inserting, replacing, accessing, repairing or protecting an intravascular catheter. <sup>6<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This procedure shall be performed even when wearing gloves. <sup>6<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>USE OF CHLORHEXIDINE FOR SKIN PREPARATION<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Maximum precautions should be taken during catheter placement, and the skin should be disinfected with an appropriate antiseptic prior to catheter insertion and during dressing changes. <sup>6<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most recommended solution is a 2% aqueous or 0.5% alcoholic chlorhexidine preparation.<sup>6<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>TOTAL BARRIER MEASURES DURING PLACEMENT OF CENTRAL VENOUS CATHETERS<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>The adoption of maximum sterility barriers (sterile cap, mask, sterile gown, sterile gloves, large sterile drape covering the patient and sterile ultrasound sheath) during CVC insertion significantly reduces Catheter-Related Bacteremia (CRB). <sup>6<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>PLACE WHERE THE TRACK IS LAID<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>The point of insertion may influence a higher or lower risk of catheter-related infection due to differences in local skin flora density and risks of thrombophlebitis. <sup>6<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The subclavian vein is the most commonly used for infection control, although more factors such as possible mechanical complications, the risk of subclavian vein stenosis or the practitioner&#8217;s experience with the device must be considered. <sup>6<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the subclavian route is contraindicated, the choice between the femoral or internal jugular vein should be made according to the patient&#8217;s body mass. Since, in patients with obesity, the infection rate is higher when the femoral vein is used than in the jugular vein. <sup>6<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another aspect that must be taken into account is the risk of thrombophlebitis, since it is higher in the femoral route than in the subclavian or internal jugular veins. <sup>6<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>REMOVAL OF UNNECESSARY CATHETERS<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>The duration of catheterization is related to the occurrence of CRB, therefore unnecessary catheters should be removed whenever possible.<sup> 6<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>HYGIENIC MANAGEMENT OF CATHETERS<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Any intervention on the catheter involves a risk of infection. For this reason, it is also recommended to reduce the manipulation of connections to the essential minimum and to clean the catheter injection points with 70\u00ba isopropyl alcohol before accessing the venous system with them. <sup>6<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>OTHER RECOMMENDATIONS<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>USE OF ULTRASOUND<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Its use makes it easier to locate the vein and to measure the depth to which the catheter is introduced. For this reason, its use reduces errors and complications during puncture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>As we have seen, correct maintenance of the central line reduces infection and, consequently, increases patient safety, as well as reducing associated costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>BIBLIOGRAPHY<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Cook, N.
